Cancer Twice!
January 2009
Dear Friends and Partners,
|
Yesterday my late morning flight from a northeastern U.S. city to Dallas/Fort Worth was cancelled due to icing conditions at the DFW Airport. I know that it was weather related; however, I also know Who is in charge of the weather and that He has a bigger purpose if I am willing to listen to the Holy Spirit’s promptings. I don’t believe that God caused the icing conditions in order to test my frustration level or to determine if I were going to complain. However, he did allow me an opportunity to use it to speak on His behalf.
As I waited at the airport, I called some of you and made good use of my five-hour delay. Finally we boarded the plane and I sat next to a young man, whom I will call Ryan, who appeared to be in his early 30’s. I later learned that he was 44 years old. (Some people are blessed with youth.) Over the next 3½ hours I discovered Ryan had been hit with cancer twice within the last couple of years. The first time the surgeons removed part of his throat and the second time they removed his left lung. The two cancers were not related to each other.
One of his friends had lived only four months after receiving the same throat cancer diagnosis as Ryan at the same time. And unlike his brothers and sisters, Ryan was not a smoker or drug user—in fact, he ate healthy most of the time since his wife was a vegetarian.
Ryan was grateful for the doctors, surgeons and hospitals who had helped him along the way. He was very grateful to be alive! I told him that I believed he was a miracle and that God had spared him for a purpose. We instantly built a trust which enabled us to share at a confidential level about our lives. He shared with me that he found peace when sitting quietly in a church and reflecting. I had an opportunity to tell Ryan about the most important relationship in my life—my personal relationship with Jesus—before our plane taxied in at DFW Airport last night.
Thousands of people around the world are also hearing how they too can have a personal relationship with Jesus because of your prayers and support of JESUS Film Harvest Partner teams. Whether it is on an airplane at 34,000 feet or in a remote village of Africa, Asia, or some other part of the globe, proclaiming a personal relationship with Jesus is not only our joy but our commandment from Acts 1:8— “but you shall receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you; and you shall be My witnesses both in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and even to the remotest part of the earth.”
I challenge you this New Year to tell someone about the most important relationship in your life and how Jesus has changed you. Please continue to pray and support Harvest Partners around the globe. Lasting hope and peace are found only in a personal relationship with Jesus Christ.
Have an amazing year!
